Essence of Silence: What Remains When Everything Else Becomes Quiet?
So much of our lives is spent becoming.
- Becoming more confident.
- More successful.
- More spiritual.
- More loving.
- More aware.
We seek answers, explore our emotions, examine our relationships and try to understand the patterns that shape our lives.
And there is value in all of this.
Growth often begins with the willingness to look more deeply at ourselves.
But perhaps there comes a point in the journey when another invitation appears.
Not an invitation to discover something new.
Not an invitation to become someone different.
But an invitation to be still.
And in that stillness, to notice what has been there all along.
What do we mean by silence?
When we think about silence, we usually think about the absence of sound.
- A quiet room.
- An empty house.
- A peaceful woodland.
- The stillness before dawn.
But the Essence of Silence points towards something deeper.
It is possible for the world around us to be quiet while our inner world remains incredibly noisy.
- Thoughts continue.
- Memories surface.
- Plans appear.
- Old conversations replay themselves.
- Questions arise.
So the silence we are exploring is not necessarily a silence around us.
It is a stillness within us.
It is the space beneath the continual movement of thought, emotion and identity.
And sometimes we catch a glimpse of it.
- Perhaps while watching a sunset.
- Sitting beside the sea.
- Listening to music.
- Meditating.
- Walking alone.
Or simply pausing unexpectedly in the middle of an ordinary day.
For a few moments, we stop trying to understand life.
We are simply present within it.
Beneath the stories we tell ourselves
Each of us carries stories about who we are.
We have names, histories, relationships, responsibilities and identities.
We may think of ourselves as a parent, partner, friend, teacher, healer, seeker, carer or spiritual person.
These identities are not wrong. They help us navigate the world and connect with one another.
But are they the whole of who we are?
If I can observe my thoughts, am I only my thoughts?
If I can feel an emotion arise and eventually pass, am I only that emotion?
If I can recognise patterns within myself, am I only those patterns?
If I can observe the different roles I play throughout my life, who is it that is aware of those roles?
This is where we begin to encounter what I call the Silent Witness.
The Silent Witness
The Silent Witness is not another personality or identity we need to develop.
It is simply a way of describing the quiet awareness that notices.
- A thought arises.
- Something notices the thought.
- An emotion arises.
Something knows the emotion is present.
A memory appears.
Something is aware of the memory.
Even when the contents of our experience continually change, there seems to be a quiet capacity within us to witness those changes.
We usually pay attention to what is appearing in awareness.
- The thought.
- The feeling.
- The problem.
- The memory.
- The desire.
- The fear.
Essence of Silence invites us to gently turn our attention towards the awareness in which those experiences are appearing.
Not to analyse it.
Not to name it.
Simply to notice.
From becoming to being
Much of personal and spiritual development focuses upon becoming.
- Who could I become?
- What could I change?
- What could I heal?
- What could I understand?
- What could I awaken within myself?
But Essence of Silence introduces a radically different possibility.
- What if, just for a moment, nothing needs fixing?
- What if there is nowhere we need to reach?
- What if awareness itself is not asking us to become anything?
This doesn’t mean we stop growing.
It doesn’t mean our problems disappear. And it doesn’t mean we withdraw from life.
Rather, it gives us somewhere deeper from which to meet life.
Instead of continually reacting from our thoughts, emotions, fears and familiar patterns, we create enough inner space to recognise them.
And within that space comes the possibility of responding differently.
A simple experiment
For a moment, stop reading.
Don’t try to meditate.
Don’t try to have a spiritual experience.
Simply pause.
- Notice your breathing.
- Notice any sounds around you.
- Notice your body.
- Notice whether thoughts are appearing.
You do not need to stop them.
Just notice them.
And then ask yourself quietly:
What is aware of this moment?
Don’t rush to answer.
Perhaps the most important part of the question is the silence that follows it.
What remains?
Throughout life we accumulate descriptions of ourselves.
Some are given to us.
Some we choose.
Some we eventually outgrow.
The journey through awareness can help us understand those identities, heal the wounds beneath them and recognise the deeper patterns moving through our lives.
But Essence of Silence offers one final invitation:
Put everything down for a moment.
- Your name.
- Your history.
- Your roles.
- Your achievements.
- Your failures.
- Your spiritual beliefs.
- Your idea of who you have been.
- Even your idea of who you are becoming.
Not forever.
Just for a moment.
And notice that something remains.
- Presence.
- Awareness.
- Being.
Perhaps the deepest question is no longer:
“Who am I becoming?”
Perhaps it becomes:
“Who am I when I no longer need to become anything?”
And perhaps, ultimately, the answer isn’t another collection of words.
Perhaps the answer is found in the silence that remains when the question itself finally becomes still.
